Almuñécar has 19 km of magnificent beaches, which offer not only quiet relaxation oases, but also for fun with the whole family. Each of them is worth a visit, from the coasts right in town, to the nudist beaches and small coves with breathtaking cliffs.

Arco del Triunfo „Paseo Blas Infante“, also known as the city gate. The arch was built in honour of the politician Blas Infante known as the father of Andalusian nationalism.Its three arches recall the three cultures, that ruled Almuñécar (Roman, Islamic and Christian).

Ornithological Park Loro Sexi With over 3,000 visitors a year one of the highlights of Almuñecar, only 100 m from the sea, on a slope of the castle San Miguel there is a significant collection of over 100 different bird species. A selection that can accommodate both the common house pigeon and spectacular peacocks, as well as striking parrots, toucans, cockatoos, macaws....

Bahia de La Herradura: The beautiful bay of La Herradura and the nearby Almuñecar are the heart of the so-called Costa Tropical and one of the most attractive corners of southern Spain.

The displays the flora of all tropical zones: Central and South America, Africa, Madagascar, China, India... In total there are 182 different plant species.

The traditional festivals

  • Festival of Almuñécar: It takes place in the middle of August and lasts one week. It ends with the procession of the patron saint and musical fireworks.

The Castillo de San Miguel is the highest point in Almuñecar. The castle was built in the 1st century B.C. by the Romans and later expanded by the Arabs into an imposing fortress.

Penon del Santo the efforts of the short but steep ascent are worthwhile, from the top of the rock one has a wonderful view to the two beach sections of Almunecar, to the castle San Miguel and to the (old) city.

  • Feria de la Herradura. It is celebrated in March and lasts the whole weekend.
  • Festival of the Barrio of San Sebastián. On the long weekend of May 1st.
  • Festival of San Juan. It is held during the night from 23 to 24 June. Residents and visitors of Almuñécar gather around the campfires that are lit on the beaches of the municipality Point Midnight. Traditionally you wash your face or take a bath.

Iglesia Parroquial de la Encarnación

It is the first baroque temple in the province of Granada. Based on the traces of Juan de Herrera was built around 1600 by Ambrosio de Vico. On the building rises the tower, slender and elegant. It houses the patron saint of Almuñécar, the Virgin of Antigua.

Palacio de Najarra was built in the 19th century by José Rubio Osorio . The outer wall doesn't say what's inside. It has a beautiful garden with a fountain in Arabic style and a small Andalusian house. The tourist information is located on the ground floor. The architectural style reminds me a little of the Alhambra in Granada.

 

  • Festival of the Barrio de Los Marineros.To celebrate the day of the Virgen del Carmen, with a lake procession and leisure activities on a weekend.
  • Festival of the Barrio de San Miguel.Between September 28th and 30th.
  • Festival of the Barrio de Torrecuevas.Also known as the festival of Chirimoya. The festivities of the Virgen del Pilar coincide with the 12th of October and last three days. Folk festivals, competitions and tastings of Chirimoyas are part of the program.
