Everyday life in Spain, on the other hand, may be no less hard and stony than at home. So it is better to get to know the country where you might want to work, live or retire a little better.
Passport or identity card are sufficient for this longer contact with Spain. Freedom of movement within the EU – and this also applies to Swiss citizens – makes this possible. In the event of illness, it is also advisable to have the European Health Insurance Card issued by your local health insurance company in your pocket.
Only after three months of residence does the paper war begin: NIE, foreigner certificate, residents’ registration office, social insurance.
Only after three months in Spain you have to register according to the law and apply for your foreigner’s number “NIE” (número de identidad de extranjero), which is indispensable for the longer everyday life in Spain. Visas, work permits or residence permits are no longer required nowadays.
Those who later really decide to settle in Spain with their main residence should prepare themselves for a paper war with the authorities: NIE, foreigner certificate (certificado de registro de ciudadano de la unión) must be concerned, the registration at the Town Hall (empadronamiento) be done.
